NO RESERVE. We're offering here a beautifully detailed pair of 1/700 scale Boeing B-29 Superfortress heavy bombers that have just come out of the 3D printer! The B-29 was the most expensive weapons program of World War Two, which at billion (equivalent to billion today), far exceeded the .9 billion Manhattan Project. The B-29 featured a multitude of technological breakthroughs including a pressurized cabin and an electronic computer-controlled fire-control system but it was the incredible range, speed, altitude performance and payload that allowed this airplane to become the first truly global strategic bomber. In fact, the B-29's operating over vast distances from bases in the Marianas played an important role in ending the Second World War including the delivery of atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the only aircraft ever to used nuclear weapons in combat. The B-29's advanced design allowed it to remain in service throughout the 1950s, finally being retired in the early 1960s after 3,970 had been built. The B-29 was previously offered as an injection molded model in this scale by Pitroad. Unfortunately, production of even famous aircraft like the B-29 (particularly in 1/700 scale!) are just too costly given the relatively small size of the audience and even the Pitroad kit is now out of production and becoming increasingly difficult to find. We believe that this 3D printed model compares very favorably and, in fact, likely surpasses the injection molded PitRoad model by a good margin but we have included high resolution photos so you can judge for yourself. The one piece models (no assembly required!) are right on the money with a wingspan of 2-7/16" and length of 1-11/16"!
While the surfaces are not perfectly smooth (3D printing is done in layers), the plastic used can be sanded and painted much the same way you would handle resin or styrene. The models may still have some powder and oil-like agent on them that needs to be removed by washing in warm water with a drop of detergent in it.
While the landing gear is represented in the retracted in-flight position, it should be fairly straight forward to add photo etch parts for a "gear down" rendition, perfect for an air base diorama (Tinian, Guam?).
These incredible B-29's should be a welcome addition to any WW2 wargamer's or 1/700 modeler's collection. Please take a look at the other 1/700 scale aircraft models that we have on auction as well. We're always happy to combine shipping for multiple purchases to save whenever possible. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions whatsoever.
