    Description

NO RESERVE.We're offering here a beautifully detailed set of two 1/700 scale Dornier Do 217E-5 bomber models that have just come out of the 3D printer! The Do 217E-5 was an advanced version of the Do 17Z bomber specifically designed to deliver one of history's first operationally used stand-off missiles, the Henschel Hs 293, which was developed for use against Allied shipping. The Hs 293 was actually a radio-controlled glide bomb. It was used in the first successful guided missile attack on 25 August 1943 when it struck the sloop HMS Bideford, causing only minor damage as the warhead failed to detonate. Two days later, however, 18 Do 217s carrying Hs 293s sank HMS Egret and badly damaged HMCS Athabaskan in the Bay of Biscay resulting in the temporary suspension of of anti-U-Boat patrols there. Over two dozen Allied ships were hit over the next year including at least nine that were sunk in actions off Anzio, Salerno and southern France. Although designed as an anti-shipping weapon, the Hs 293 was also used to attack bridges over the See and Selume Rivers in Normandy in 1944.
This is the first (and only) model of a Do 217E-5 complete with Hs 293 missiles ever produced in 1/700 scale. We think that the 3D printed models offered here exceed the quality of comparable WEM resin and Pit-Road white metal models by a good margin but we've posted
some high resolution photos so you can judge for yourself. While photography of these little gems is a challenge for our equipment and limited skills, check out the well proportioned model including the fuselage with detailed glazed nose, cockpit canopy and dorsal turret; the wings with authentic engine cowlings, the twin tail assembly and, especially, the tiny but beautifully rendered Hs 293 missile and fuel tank under the wings!
The surfaces are not perfectly smooth (3D printing is done in layers) but the plastic used can be sanded and painted much the same way you would handle resin or styrene. The models may still have some powder and oil-like agent on them that can easily be removed by washing in warm water with a drop of detergent added to it.
While the landing gear is represented in the retracted in-flight position, it should be fairly straight forward to add photo etch parts for a "gear down" rendition, perfect for an air base diorama
These outstanding Do 217E-5 models should be a welcome addition to any WW2 wargamer's or 1/700 modeler's collection, particularly those interested in Luftwaffe anti-shipping missions employing one of the world's first stand-off missiles. Please take a look at the other 1/700 scale aircraft models that we have on auction as well. We're always happy to combine shipping for multiple purchases to save whenever possible. Please don't hesitate to contact us if you have any questions whatsoever.
