    1856 autograph note signed by John S. Phelps (1814-1886), who was an 1836 West Point graduate who served as a brigadier general in the civil war, as military governor of Arkansas and as governor of Missouri, with service including the battle of Pea Ridge.  Note is directed to the President and recommends an individual for servicea s the Marshall of the Territory of Utah.  Mounted to album page at left.
