    Description

    June 17, 1864 Confederate soldier's letter written by M. D. Black, possibly the same M.D. Black that served in Co. H 52nd North Carolina Inf. who is listed on the National Park soldier's database. It reads in part:" All the rest of the boys is well. I have escaped as yet. We have been fighting here for several days. All of the boys that you know have escaped. We drove the yankees back as yet. I hope we will keep them on their own side of the plantation. We chased them out of their breastworks. Our boys stood to them like good fellows. We taken some prisoners. I think the war is a coming to the end. I hope we will get to come home soon."
