Description

1864 autograph letter of Joseph Smith (1790-1877), head of the Bureau of Yards and Docks in the Navy Department.  Smith was a career navy officer with service starting in the War of 1812, where he was wounded in the Battle of Lake Champlain.  He was assigned as chief of the Bureau in 1846 and held the position until 1869; he was placed on the retired list in 1861 and promoted to rear admiral in 1862 but continued to serve.  Letter relates to congress publishing a dictionary; letter mounted to album page at left.
