    Description

For sale is an original 1865 Andrew Johnson / US Senate brevet commission for military surgeon, Josiah Simpson.
Simpson was a long-serving military surgeon, serving on the front lines of the Mexican-American War, the Civil War and on US Government exploratory expeditions to the American West. His brother, Hervey Simpson, was an important Civil War figure, a vocal critic of McClellan, led the building of the Transatlantic Railroad and also served on several important expeditions. Josiah Simpson was so esteemed that a military hospital was named after him in Hampton Virginia.
Large commission on papyrus, with a stamped signature from Andrew Johnson and with the "advice and consent of the Senate," gives Simpson the rank of Lieutenant Colonel for "faithful and meritorious service during the war." This is fresh to the market from an estate in New Jersey and has never been offered online for sale.
