    Description

    1866 letter written and signed by Giles A. Smith as major general at Brownsville, TX, addressed to Edwin Stanton as Secretary of War and recommending William E. Strong for a commission in the regular army.  Smith (1829-1876) was captain in the 8th Missiouri, then colonel, appointed brigadier general in 1863.  He declined a spot in the regular army after the war (just 2 weeks after this letter was written) and was involved in Illinois politics.  Strong (1840-1891) was inspector genreal on McKean's staff, and then for Oliver Howard.  Strong was brevetted as a brigadier general but did not hav ea military career after the war.
