    Description

    1866 note on congressional letterhead signed by Halbert E. Paine (1826-1905), a civil war general who served as a member of congress for Wisconsin 1865-1871.  Paine started the war as colonel of the 4th Wisconsin and was appointed as a brigadier general in April 1863.  After his congressional service, he served as a lawyer and then became commissioner of patents in 1879.  39th Congress letterhead; note requests a congressional directory for a friend.  Mounted to album page.
