    Description

1868 letter written and signed by William H. Irwin (1819-1886), who served as colonel of the 7th and then the 49th PA infantry; receiving a postwar brevet as a brigadier general.  Later historians have been less kind, noting a court martial for drunkenness and sending the 7th Maine alone on an attack on 2 dug in confederate brigades at Antietam (the major who led the regiment was awarded the medal of honor).  Letter written to Horatio Seymor and deals with personal and political matters, includes reference to Winfield Scott Hancock, etc.  Neat document.
