    Description

    1869 note written and signed by William M. Belknap.  Belknap (1829-1890) serived as secretary of War 1869-1876, but was investigated for the sale of arms to France and eventually was forced out of office after corruption was discovered.  Belknap was impeached after his departure from office, but not convicted.  Note is mounted to album page at left; datelined Keokuk IA; brief personally oriented note of thanks probably addressed to General William Strong.
