“This is probably one of the best Elgin American'Leaping Gazelles' Carryall you will find. It is in beautiful condition. Many people list these vanity cases as 1920s or 30s when in fact they were made in the late 1940s - early 1950s. They are Post Deco although the vibe is decidedly Art Deco - the embossed leaping gazelles leaping amidst the ferns. The carryall is superbly well made & very clean. Push the thumb catch to activate the spring loaded catch & the case glides open to reveal a good clear mirror & beautiful interior gleaming & gorgeous. There are two compartments adorned with embossed leaping gazelles. The powder well lid is signed 'Elgin American MADE IN U.S.A.' The powder well has a gorgeous satinzed finish & the original beautifully made sifter. The next lidded compartment & the lipstick compartment are satinized too. There is a blemish to the finish in the lipstick compartment and does not have the lipsticks holder. The mechanism works perfectly. There is a money clip on a spring which works perfectly. The hinged mirror moves down to reveal another compartment for cigarettes or make-up. The mirror lid as it is spring loaded. The whole item is beautiful. The lid and bottom are curved, rounded. Although it is curved, it rests securely on a table.
This is the perfect size as an evening bag / minaudiere when a handbag would look out of place.
This minaudiere measures 4 1/2" X " 1/2" /2" & weighs 279 grams.
