Archive of original paperwork from 80 th Indiana Infantry’s Captain William M. Duncan.
Duncan, from Princeton, Indiana, was captain of Company A before becoming regimental
quartermaster. The 80 th Indiana was a real fighting regiment. Organized at Princeton, the 80 th
lost heavily at Perryville, Kentucky in October 1862, and the following year took part in
campaigns and battles in eastern Tennessee with General Ambrose Burnside. As part of the 23 rd
Army Corps, the 80 th took part in the Atlanta Campaign and the Battles of Franklin and
Nashville, then moved east again to rejoin Sherman for the 1865 campaign against Wilmington,
Kingston, Goldsboro and Raleigh, North Carolina. After the Confederate surrender, the 80 th
remained at Salisbury until June 1865.
This archive consists of:
1) Abstract of articles transferred to officers of the 80 th in the field in June 1865, listing
number of mules, wagons, wagon covers, harness, curry combs, field desks, etc. (entirely
handwritten).
2) Monthly Return of Clothing, Camp and Garrison Equipage, June 1864, with numbers of
bootees, stockings, knapsacks, haversacks, etc. (printed form with numbers in ink)
3) A printed form, Report of Camp Equipage, almost entirely blank
4) A printed form, Abstract of Articles received from officers in the field, March 1865,
including mules, wagons, wagon whips, etc., with numbers in ink.
5) An envelope (stamp missing) addressed to Capt. Duncan, 23 rd Corps, “via Washington
City.”
6) Printed form, Abstract of Articles transferred to officers of the 80 th , January 1865, listing
numbers of blouses-lined, trousers, stockings, bootees, woolen blankets, etc.
7) Printed form, Abstract of articles received from officers, November 1864, listing numbers
of envelopes, memorandum books, bottles of ink, sealing wax, etc.
8) A small piece of paper, with “Memorandum of Issues October” and other notes written in
pencil by Duncan.
9) A handwritten form, Requisition for fuel for commissioned officers of Company H,
December 1864, listing allowance in cords, feet and inches.
10) A handwritten form, Requisition for fuel for commissioned officers of Company C,
December 1864, listing allowance in cords, feet and inches.
11) A handwritten form, Requisition for stationary for Company I, December 1864, listing
envelopes, sealing wax, etc.
12) A handwritten form, Requisition for stationary for Company D, December 1864, listing
envelopes, sealing wax, etc.
13) A handwritten form, Requisition for stationary for Company B, December 1864, listing
envelopes, sealing wax, etc.
14) A handwritten form, Requisition for stationary for Company A, December 1864, listing
envelopes, sealing wax, etc.
15) A handwritten form, Requisition for stationary for Company H, December 1864, listing
envelopes, sealing wax, etc.
A great archive documenting the material culture of a hard-fighting western regiment in some of
the last campaigns of the Civil War. Overall these documents are in good condition, with some
fold separations, a few tears, toning, etc., as one would expect from documents of this age.
