Description
an authentic antique, late18th or
19th Century
Himalayan Region aerophone,
a oboe-like flute or shawm,
known or refered to with many names:
Nadaswaram, Nadhaswaram, Nagaswaram
- Nadasvaram, Nagasvaram, Natacuvaram,Natasvaram, Nagasvara, Nataswaram, Nathaswaram, Ezhil, Shehnai -
it is a South Asian double reed wind instrument
and considered amoung the world's loudest non-brass acoustic instruments,
of a hardwood body with metal top and rings and a decorated flaring bell of metal - keezh anaichu
part of the family of instruments known as Mangala Vadyan,
with
7 fingerholes
and
5 unfingered holes
in the lower part of the tube,
it has hanging on cords:
the staple that fits into the body with
mel anaichu and kendai
, is entwined with metal thread,
a metal pirouette,
2 reeds that can be placed on the staple, and
a needle / mandrel, to be used for cleaning the holes, the reed or saliva to allow free passage of air, or to fill the unfingered holes with wax plugs for fine-tuning
length (excl. staple and reed): circa 50 cm / 19.7 inch
weight circa 565 gr.
