THE BEST TIME TO PLANT A TREE WAS 25 YEARS AGO...WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR...PLANT A TREE NOW SO YOU CAN ENJOY IT LATER!!!!Araucaria bidwillii - Bunya Bunya - False Monkey Puzzle - Bunya Pine - Australian Monkey Puzzle
This auction is for one (1) seedling.
The Araucaria bidwillii is native to NE Australia (Queensland), but grows in many parts of the world, given the right climate conditions.
These seedlings are 10"-14" in height (from above the soil line). The seeds were harvested from trees in California. The seeds were sown 12/14/2017. I will be making only a few seedlings available for sale at this time. This particular seed harvest was from a mega seed harvest...a once every 3 year mega seed harvest event...because of that fact, the next 2 years of seed production/availability will be poor, making the next couple years seed harvest very low yield.
The pictures represent a sampling of the seedlings for sale.
While the A. bidwillii is relatively quick to 'begin' the germination process, (2-4 weeks)...the completion of the germination that takes place below ground takes 6-18 months before the seedling begins to emerge from the soil. Yet another reason there are few A. bidwillii ever offered for sale.
I've included several pictures of a tree...belonging to a friend of mine...well on its way to maturity...about 20 years old...about 20 ft (5.5 m) tall...located in the Livingston, TX area...which has endured a temperature down to 12 F (-11 C).
This species makes a great landscaping tree...in areas of full or part sun.
The seedlings will be sent un-potted, (no pot), but will be provided with a small amount of moist soil in a plastic baggie around the root ball to help reduce any stress during shipping/transit.
There is plenty of info about the A. bidwillii to be had on Google, and I encourage you to see whats available.
NOTE: All Araucaria species are conifers and a large number of conifer species/cultivars/varieties, depending on the area/climate they are grown in, are susceptible to various forms of fungus...some foliage specific and some root specific. Some species of Araucaria are very susceptible to the Phytophthora fungus species. During the seedling growing process I treat my soil for the Phytophthora fungus. Once you receive and pot up your seedlings with your own soil mix (it should always be a well draining mix), I encourage you to treat your own soil mix with a fungicide that takes care of the various Phytophthora fungus species.
(These seedlings as well as the plants in my other eBay listings are being offered for sale locally and at other selling venues.)
MY ADVISE ON GROWING YOUR ARAUCARIA:
1) any seedling less than 12" - 15" tall, is much to young and delicate to plant in the ground...keep it in a pot until it gets a little bigger, (this is my opinion).
2) Araucaria species in general need a very fast/quick draining soil mix...if you only have access to typical garden center soil...you will need to add soil amendments such as perlite, bark chips, expanded shale, decomposed granite, etc...anything to break up the compaction of the soil. Root rot, brought on by poorly draining soil, kills more seedlings than anything else...I water mine when the soil is almost dry.
3) Araucaria species in general do best in a slightly acidic soil...pH in the area of 5-6.
4) Araucaria species in general, tend to do best with near balanced fertilizers in the range of: 2-2-2 to 6-6-6 (N-P-K).
5) in the area I live...southeast TX...I've had no insect/pest problems...this may not be the case in your area.
6) Araucaria are conifers (cone bearing trees), some conifers are known to be susceptible to various forms of the Phytophthora fungus. I treat the soil I grow my seedling in, with a fungicide called "Subdue MAXX"...do I need to treat my soil with it...I don't know for sure...I do it as a precaution.
All of the above info is from my experience, with growing Araucaria araucana...and the 5 other species of Araucaria I grow. Your needs and experience may or may not be the same. I do encourage you to do some Google research about growing Araucaria, and check your USDA zone for cold hardiness info.
Please contact me if you have any questions.
When your seedling(s) arrive, you may find that the seed is still attached or has detached during shipment. The seed is really just a souvenir...left over from the seedlings germination process. The seedling(s) you receive have long since stopped needing the seed for nourishment. So if the seed has detached...that's OK...and if the seed has not detached...that's OK too...it will eventually detach on its own.
For domestic shipping, (shipping within the United States...excluding AK & HI), I use the USPS Priority Mail shipping. Depending on your location, the average transit time will be 2 - 3 days.
I go above and beyond when it comes to safe packaging of the plants I sell...I have sold and shipped well over 100 Araucaria seedlings, and have only had two (2) that were damaged during shipment and the unpacking process. Some of these seedlings are very delicate, and as such there is a slight risk of a bent leaf and or a broken branch. If you are not willing to take on the possibility of slight damage to the seedling(s) you want to buy...then please do not purchase. I will not issue any refunds or partial refunds due any damages incurred due to shipping or unpacking. However, "I will consider a slight reduction in price, should you choose to purchase a replacement...note I said, 'consider'...after photo(s) of the damage is provided to me."
NOTE:
California, Arizona, Hawaii buyers, (or any other US states, that impose restrictions on incoming plants), I will sell and ship to you, but I will not and can not be held responsible for any confiscations by your state Ag departments/groups/organizations. I am a hobby grower and I do not provide any nursery inspection certificates.
