Trees have completed their first year of growth and have excellent root structure which will allow them to continue growing uninterrupted once planted. An ideal tree for wildlife food plots, orchards or landscaping. Chestnuts are fast growing trees and can begin producing nuts in as little as five years after planting and every year thereafter.
Seedlings are hybrids, believed to be a cross between Chinese and European Chestnuts, which yield large quantities of very large chestnuts year after year. Parent trees are old and have resisted any blight or disease for over 50 years and continue to produce. Nuts are sweet with thin skin and perfect for eating or for wildlife food plots.
Seedlings are grown in individual pots. There is no root-binding like you will see in older potted trees offered at retail locations and therefore will begin substantial growth at a faster pace. It is not uncommon for a tree to reach a height of over six feet tall with a 1” diameter trunk after just three years of growth.
Size:
Grows in an upright form with spreading branches. Can spread to 50’ and 60’tall at full maturity.
Hardiness Zones:
Zones 4-9
Soil Preferences/Tolerances:
Tree prefers mildly acidic well-drained woodland soil. Avoid planting in heavy clay or consistently wet soils. Chestnuts will grow in partial shade but plant in full sun for fastest growth and shortest time to nut production. If planting for wildlife food plots, do not plant in understory of woods. Full shade will significantly stunt growth rate.
Growth Rate:
Fast – 2-3 feet/year
Uses:
Grown for food crops for animal or human consumption. Excellent for wildlife food plots, orchards or landscaping.
Notes:
Chestnuts are simply the best food plot tree available. Once established, Deer and other wildlife will travel from miles around just to eat them. Plant two or more trees approximately 25-30 feet apart for best pollination results. They are also excellent trees for orchards and back yards, having very large sweet-tasting organic nuts at a rate of 15-30/pound.
Planting instructions will be included with purchase to assist you in getting the best results.
The optimum time to plant bare-root trees is when they are dormant from fall to early spring. When received, trees will appear as dormant – leaves will be yellowing or brown. Chestnuts maintain their dead leaves through winter until spring buds push them off.
I will ship all orders immediately weather permitting. During late winter months when temperatures are consistently below freezing, I cannot ship bare-root trees due to concerns with root-freeze during shipment. In these cases, I will contact you and arrange a suitable date to ship as soon as the spring weather breaks.
