    AUG. 16, 1862 ORDERS FROM GENERAL BUTLER AT NEW ORLEANS FOR AN OFFICER & 20 MEN TO DETROY ALL BOATS ON THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER BETWEEN N.O. AND BATON ROUGE, "TO INTERRUP ALL MEANS OF TRANSIT OR COMMUNICATION OF THE REBELS FROM OPPOSITE SIDES OF THE RIVER"

    "Headquarters Department of the Gulf, New Orleans, Aug. 16th, 1862"
    , to Lt. Col. Farr (Alph B. Farr, Lt. Col. of the 26th Mass. Infantry), "By order Maj. Gen. Butler", and signed by R. S. Davis, Capt. & Acting Assistant Adjutant General (Davis served on the staff of General Butler as Asst. Adjutant General at New Orleans, and the Dept. of VA & NC), ordering as follows:
    "Lt. Col. Farr will select a good officer and twenty men, with six days rations, to go on board the 'Sallie Robinson' this evening, starting tomorrow morning to proceed up the river, taking or destroying all boats, flat boats, skiffs, launches of every description between here and Baton Rouge. The Officer must use some discretion, what good boats can be brought back he will bring, but all others will be destroyed, the object being to interrupt all means of transit or communication of the rebels from opposite sides of the river.

    Below this, Lt. Col. Farr orders Lt. J. S. Cooke to comply with the order, and signs, "A.B. Farr, Lieut. Col. Comdg 26th Regt. Mass Vols."
