Offered is a piece of Civil War History that tells a story! During the war, Bounties were offered for men to enlist. You got paid for your service, however, should battle claim your life, your money was to be signed off for via a second comptroller. This is the case with these papers- young Martin Orton of the B Company of the 15th New York Cavalry passed in battle and his father, Amos Orton, signed off for his bounty to be received by himself. Attached to the official paper via glue is a handwritten letter by the father stating this. What is interesting is that the pay accounts for service from December 1860 to July 1861, yet the papers are dated much later in the war--October 1865, 6 months after Lee surrendered his troops and officially ended the war. One can imagine the anguish of a parent having to travel miles to claim their child's bounty...years after their death. It should also be noticed that, in researching Amos Morton, it can be found that a man of the same name founded Ortonville, Michigan. He and his family left New York State to seek/enact what could be considered "The American Dream". Link Provided Below. This set of papers will be mailed USPS First class.https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/9521021/amos-orton
