When President Lincoln called for 150,000 volunteers and soon raised the number to 300,000 many counties throughout the
Union
established bounties to be paid to volunteers. Most counties did not have the cash to fund the bounties and had to borrow the funds from citizens. This part-printed note was issued to re-pay Harrison Biggs $ 25 as a part of such a loan of
"money paid to vol. county (bounty) fund and states that it is for "Expense of Volunteering". The note was issued by the treasurer of Harrison county and is dated Dec. 1865 at
