Offered for your consideration is a small, partly-printed document acknowledging the receipt of the taxes paid by an individual in Pulaski County, Arkansas. The text of the document states that there was “

”. The signature of “
J R R Adams
” appears at the conclusion, signing in his capacity as “
Sheriff and Collector.
”. It is through this signature that the location of this receipt can be determined. Cursory research seems to indicate that J. R. R. Adams assumed his position in April, 1864. He continued to show up in official documents after the war, as well as the census. One record indicates that he was the postmaster of the Hibernia Post Office in Pulaski County, though the date of this document is not known to the seller. The back of this document was originally blank, though “
1865
” has been penciled near the left end (when this was done is unknown to the seller). At the time this document was issued, Pulaski County had been under Union occupation, so it would be interesting to know how these funds were being used by the county and state. An interesting little document, worthy of further research.
The presently offered document exhibits signs of expected period use, followed by years of subsequent storage. Light toning is noted across the entire surface, imparting to the paper a beige to tan hue. Several darker stains can be seen, though these do not affect the legibility of the text. The document was printed in period ink on blue-lined white paper, with the manuscript additions being accomplished in iron gall ink. Several folds are present, the three primary ones somewhat affecting the integrity of the paper. The edges are irregular, with the top and bottom being somewhat ragged (it appears that this piece was torn from a larger sheet). Measuring approximately 1⅞ x 8⅛ inches, this piece would make a great research project for the local historian.
