Description

Plinia trunciflora Jaboticaba seedling. I grew these from germinating seeds. The plant is similar to the one in the photo it is in a 3 1/2“ pot. It is 2” to 4” tall.
Plinia trunciflora is a well-known species of jaboticaba. The primary identifying features are the long penduncles (1-4cm long) include the 1-4 large seeds, short juvenile period bearing fruit at just 4-7 years of age from seed, costate ribs on the fruit and the large lanceolate leaves. The flat dark green leaves have an impressed primary nerve with minor secondary pinnate veins, a dull sheen, and a very minor crease along the primary vein. The globose fruit has 5-25 light green or bronze costate ribs that diminish in size as the fruit ripens to the point where a fully ripened fruit may have no costate features. These costate ribs often retain their light green color even after they stop protruding which creates a striking contrast of light green streaks across an otherwise red fruit (this appearance is the cultivar's most defining feature). The fruit often has minor remenants of the sepal on the apex which is easily wiped off or eaten with the fruit. The connection of the fruit with the penduncle can range from a minor nipple to a significantly protruding rostrate point especially when growing in clusters of up to 6 fruit. The fruit contains 2-4 large seeds. The sweet juicy pulp is of excellent quality and similar to other jaboticabas.
