    Description

SCHILDKRAUT COMPACT ~ BLUE PEACOCK MOTIF ~ GUILLOCHE  ENAMEL, HAND PAINTED  ~ NEVER USED
Fabulous compact, a treasure.  The original price tag, with the Schildkraut name on it is still on the bottom.  The price, at the time, was  .00, an expensive proposition (that is, IF this were from 1960, the price today would be 3.00).  The mirror is bright & clean, can I just say perfect.  Yes.  The puff and the sifter are unused and perfect.  The gold tone metal is near perfect; the bottom has the sticker on it and it has a small black mark which looks more like a Sharpie pen mark than a mar to the metal.  About the top, it is Guilloche enamel, hand painted between layers.  Explanation:
In appearance it is usually a single transparent  color through which a repeating design is seen.  The underlying metal is engraved with a lathe usually but not always in a 'engine turned' pattern.   Layers of colored and clear transparent enamel are applied, sometimes hand painting (most often simple floral) is added between layers, then fired.
So, this one has a repeating 'granular' pattern in white enamel, covered in clear enamel, hand painted, and covered in more clear baked enamel.  You can actually feel raised paint on the eyespots of the tails!  The background flowers are a golden color, some leaves green and some are pale grey.  It seems the grey leaves and the white backgound are meant to create a misty feel.
