Vintage Elgin American Compact - Many Compartments

I was cleaning my mother's dresser out and low & behold I found this.  This I am told is a compact although it looks like it would hold lipstick among other things
.   Quite elaborate.  Mirror was broken and removed for safety.  Some minor surface scratches as seen in pics.  No bangs or dents.  Photos will speak for themselves on this one.  I was told this has some age to it.
